About Government Medical College Azamgarh
History
In 2006, the Government of Uttar Pradesh decided to establish a new medical college and hospital at Azamgarh in the eastern part of the state at an approximate cost of ₹300 crore. The decision aimed to bridge a critical healthcare gap in the underserved Purvanchal (eastern UP) region. OPDs began in 2006, which gradually expanded to a 140-bed IPD. Today the hospital runs with 550+ beds across inpatient, emergency, and private wards.
Academic activities formally began in August 2013, when the Medical Council of India (now National Medical Commission) recognised the institution for 100 MBBS seats. The college was initially affiliated with King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, and subsequently re-affiliated with the newly established Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU). BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, serves as the mentor institution.
In November 2025, GMC Azamgarh established a Medical Education Unit (MEU) — a dedicated body for faculty development and teaching methodology enhancement, reflecting the institution’s commitment to academic quality upgradation.

The vision is to become a leading medical institution in eastern UP through continuous academic improvement, research, and patient care excellence.
Academic Environment

The institution actively holds annual academic events, cultural programs, sports meets, and student-led activities. Tablet distributions to MBBS and paramedical students (2024-25) reflect the push toward technology-integrated education.

Admission Tips for GMC Azamgarh 2026
- Register for both MCC and UP NEET separately — two independent registrations with separate deadlines and fees.
- Obtain UP domicile certificate early — it takes 7–15 days via tehsil/SDM office; required for 85% state quota seats.
- Stay in counselling through all rounds — GMC Azamgarh’s AIQ cutoff expanded 64% from R1 (9,989) to R3 (16,361) in 2025. Missing Round 2 or 3 = missing the opportunity.
