Short answer: The National Medical Commission’s MBBS seat matrix for academic year 2026–27 lists 1,40,214 seats across 836 listed medical colleges and institutions. The matrix records 1,27,028 renewed seats and 13,186 increased seats. It excludes Institutes of National Importance and reflects approvals as on 1 September 2026. NMC says the matrix may be revised after appeal decisions or other competent-authority decisions.
Download the official NMC 2026–27 MBBS seat matrix and 10 September notice (PDF). For an admission decision, also check the current seat matrix published by the counselling authority handling your quota and round. NMC-approved intake alone does not establish when, where, or under which quota a seat will be offered.

What does the NMC seat matrix say?
The NMC document is an approved-intake list, organised by state and college. Its national totals are:
| Measure | NMC figure |
|---|---|
| Renewed MBBS seats | 1,27,028 |
| Increased MBBS seats | 13,186 |
| Total listed MBBS seats | 1,40,214 |
| Listed colleges and institutions | 836 |
The 13,186 figure is the increased seats column in the published matrix. It should not be read as a promise that 13,186 additional choices will appear in one NEET UG counselling round. The notice says the matrix can change.
How do I check seats for my state or college?
Open the NMC PDF and find the college name or state in its MBBS matrix. Check the college’s approved total intake and whether the entry is marked as a renewed, increased, or new-establishment seat. Then compare it with the latest MCC or relevant state counselling authority’s seat matrix for your specific round, quota, and category.
This article does not reproduce a state-wise increase table because the earlier estimates on this page were not reconciled with individual entries in the NMC PDF. Use the source document for college-level figures. If a revised NMC matrix or counselling matrix is published, the newer official document takes precedence.
Will the additional seats lower NEET UG cutoffs?
No fixed marks or rank change can be inferred from the national seat increase. A closing rank depends on the college, quota, category, candidates’ preferences, eligibility, fees, and the seats actually offered in that counselling round. More approved capacity may change options, but it does not guarantee a lower cutoff or an allotment for any candidate.
Compare previous closing ranks only with the current round’s official vacancy and allotment information. Our NEET counselling guide explains the central and state routes; the college predictor can help you shortlist options, but its estimates do not replace official allotment data.
What should students check before changing choices?
- Find the college and approved MBBS intake in the latest NMC document.
- Confirm that the same college and seat appear in the current MCC or state counselling matrix for your round and quota.
- Check category eligibility, domicile rules where applicable, tuition and other fees, and the reporting instructions in the counselling authority’s notice.
- Put colleges in your genuine order of preference, and follow the authority’s choice-locking and upgradation rules.

Frequently asked questions
How many MBBS seats are listed for 2026–27?
NMC’s matrix as on 1 September 2026 lists 1,40,214 MBBS seats, excluding Institutes of National Importance. This includes 1,27,028 renewed seats and 13,186 increased seats. The notice allows later revision.
Does 13,186 mean new seats in NEET UG Round 2?
No. It is the national increased-seats total in the NMC matrix. Check the current counselling authority’s round-specific seat matrix to see which seats are available for choice filling.
Which state gained the most seats?
This article does not rank states. The earlier state estimates were not supported by a verified aggregation of the college-level NMC entries. Check the official PDF for your state and college; publish a state ranking only after those rows have been reconciled.
Will my NEET cutoff fall because of the increase?
There is no guaranteed marks or rank movement. Closing ranks depend on the actual seat pool, quota, category, choices, and competition in each round.
Where is the official list?
